About Romans care home

I am very happy at Romans. I have a warm comfortable room. Staff always friendly and helpful.

Mable - resident

Romans is a 2 star residential care home, run by the West Sussex Housing Society.  In this retirement home we provide long term care, short stay, convalescence and respite care.

There is lots of information on this page about our home covering such things as location, facilities, fees, food, the staff and key documents for download.  You can either read it all, or use the short cuts given in the ‘page contents’ above.

Romans is a pleasant two story house, set in a quiet residential area in Southwick [next to Shoreham and near Hove and Brighton].  The house has gardens for the residents and easy parking for visitors, and is close to the local shops.  The Southwick railway station is the far side of the town centre.  Southwick has a lovely village green, where cricket is played, a busy community centre and an excellent theatre.

We have always aimed and worked towards making this a happy home for the residents and the staff.  We warmly invite you to come and visit us - just check first, as we might all be out on one of our outings!

Our Activities

One of our aims is to maintain a stimulating atmosphere in the homes. We put on regular activities for our residents, some at their suggestion:

• Weekly entertainments
• Weekly card afternoons
• Music for Health
• Social activities and outings throughout the year
• Individual times with our activities coordinator
• Regular church services

Besides the main festivals, we celebrate ‘theme days’ at various times in the year, for example: Valentines day [14th Feb] • St David’s day [1st March] • St Patrick’s day [17th March] • St George’s day [23rd April] • VE day [6th May]  • Bastille day [14th July] • Diwali [1st November] • St Andrew’s days [30th November] and more.

We also have good contact with the local schools - in particular the Glebe School; with our residents visiting the school and the children coming to see the residents.  The children also come sing to them at special times of the year, such as Christmas.

Our Official Rating & CQC reports

Care Quality Commission rating: 2 star or good [we are eagerly awaiting our next inspection as we have been working very hard toward obtaining the coveted 3 star status]
[rating runs from 0 to 3 stars]

Our Fees

Fees start from £435 per week depending on care needs and facilities required.

We are happy to accept those who are funded by the local authority - however a ‘third party top up’ is required to bring the authority payments in line with the Society’s fees. This cannot be paid by the resident and is usually paid by a relative.

What we eat - menus

Good food is so important to the happiness of the elderly - we believe that tasty and nutritious food is right at the heart of a good home.  Romans prides itself on its home cooking and we are frequently complimented on it by residents and visitors - so time your visits accordingly!

Here you can see a typical menu for this day in the week - there is lots of choice, along with snacks between times.  Of course we encourage our residents to eat together in the dining room, but they are free to have meals in their own rooms.

Besides the main meals, there is an early morning drink between 6am & 7.30am, morning coffee and biscuits at 10.30am and a night time drink with snacks from 9pm. Residents are also very welcome to ask staff to bring them drink and a snack at any time, night or day.
