Work at West Sussex Housing Society care homes
The happiness and comfort of our residents is at the center of all that we do - and has been since our founding. To build on that foundation we work hard to find and retain good staff who are happy in their work. We have over 80 people employed at the two homes, some permanent and some ‘on bank’. We don’t use agency staff, as we believe that it is important to maintain continuity for the sake of residents and other staff alike.
Both care homes are good places to work in, with kind and hard working managers. Over recent years a lot of money has been spend to enhance the houses in all sorts of ways.
Occasionally, permanent staff still have to move away, and so there will be the odd vacancy. We choose to find the best staff for our homes, pay competitive rates and then develop their skills even more. So we are proud of our training program which ensures that staff are kept right up to date.
Because we aim to take our staff through the appropriate NVQ’s, we will sometimes take on young people with less experience but with the right attitude - positive, hard-working and eager to help and learn - so if you fit the bill, we encourage you to get in contact with us!

Staff training at our care homes
We consider that staff training is essential for our staff so that they can best help our residents.
“The recruitment process is thorough and the induction and training programme is very good so that staff have the knowledge and skills they need to do their job well.
Staff said they received good induction that includes guidance about providing personal care and shadowing senior staff until they fully understand people’s needs and the way they like their care to be provided. There is an induction and training programme. The induction programme is a pathway to an NVQ award and provides a good foundation knowledge for staff. In addition to the workbook, newly appointed staff shadow more experienced staff for three to four weeks so that their developing skills can be observed. The person providing the supervision then gives feedback and goes through the book with them. Records that were seen showed that all staff have attended mandatory training sessions and their skills have been updated when necessary, training certificates were also seen on staff files. The care of people who have dementia has been added to the list of topics that all staff are required to attend and ten staff now have achieved a qualification at level two in dementia awareness.
The management team meet in the autumn to put together a training programme for the year. Attendance at required training days is paid for and sessions take place away from the home ...so that it easier for staff to concentrate. The manager is a key trainer in moving and handling and wants to develop her training skills. The feedback from staff through surveys and discussion indicated that people are provided with a good standard of training. One person said the training programme had attracted her to the job and that the training opportunities are ‘excellent’. ”
