Various notes and comments from West Sussex Housing Society:
PAT dogs visiting Romans on a weekly basis
Romans care home has established a link with PAT. This idea was orginally put forward by our Friends committee and Vanessa Farmer, Romans manager, has been working hard to link-up with this valuable charity.
PAT is a registered charity and stands for Pets As Therapy. The Society has for some time been aware of the benefit of regular contact with animals and the joy that an animal can bring.
Romans now have their own PAT dog called Oscar. He is a three year old golden retriever who visits the home every Thursday morning with his owner Linda Spring. Oscar is enjoying the attention he receives from the residents in the way of pats and hugs. We hope to have some photos in our gallery of Oscar, Linda and our residents.
If you would like to find out more about PAT and what they do please visit their website at http://www.petsastherapy.org/.
Chutney and jam week has added £80 to Romans Friends funds
Romans Friends together with staff prepared jams and chutneys to sell during the final week in November all monies raised were donated to the Friends fund. The sale was a great success and raised over £80. Many thanks to those that contributed to the sale and to those who bought our preserves.
Romans Race night raises over £750 for our residents
On Friday 25th September 2009 over 80 people attended a race night at Romans Pub. Chris Pobjoy, the Landlord kindly allowed Romans to run a fundraising event on its premises. The event was a sell-out and the price of the ticket included a fantastic buffet prepared by our resident cook Sandra Catchpole. Janice Mase and Shirley Turner, from our Friends Committee, helped Sandra prepare the food for the evening. Peter Hewitt, a member of the Society, ran the Tote and our compere, Andy from Romans pub, kept us all entertained announcing the races and the winnings.
A special thanks has to go to Jacquie Richards, Romans Secretary, who organised the event and managed to get sponsors for the all the races. Jeanette Benfield, Lesley Ede, Shirley Turner and Julie Veck helped Peter run the Tote and we are grateful for their support.
Thank you to everyone who attended this evening and made it such a great success. We will let you know how the Friends intend to spend the money. These events help the Society to provide extra trips and activities that our residents enjoy and appreciate.
Update on Romans NAPA 2009 challenge
Romans took part in “A Breath of Fresh Air” last year for the first time and we were delighted to be one of the first 35.
This year all of the residents asked if they could take part in the challenge and the staff were happy to oblige and devised various ways to spend the week outside.
For those residents who were unable to venture outside, due to illness, they were able to sit by an open window. A staff member brought in her guinea pigs and they were stroked, patted and fed. The guineas were on their best behaviour and have been asked for a return visit. This was a very successful venture.
Romans remembers D Day
Romans residents featured in the Herald last week. The article described how Roman residents remembered the D Day landings and those that were lost. The home was decorated with bunting and a lunch of spam fritters was served. The residents planted a rose bush in the garden in memory of those who died.
Our Chairman, Tony Matthews, receives prestigious Rotary award
West Sussex Housing Society has been associated with the local Rotary clubs for over fifty years. The Society was founded by members of Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club and is still affliliated with Rotary. Our current Chairman, Mr Tony Matthews who is a Rotarian, has been a member of the Society for nearly 15 years and became the Society’s Chairman in 2004.
Romans raises funds to purchase a flat screen television
Both Carol Jennings and Edward Shipsey have each carried out fundraising activities in order to fund the purchase a new 42 inch flat screen television.
Carol carried out a sponsored silence and Edward had his head shaved in total they raised nearly £400. The Friends Committee contributed further funds to meet the cost of the television. The home has now taken delivery of their brand new television.
Nintendo Wii at Romans
Romans care home recently received a Nintendo Wii which was purchased out of monies raised by the Friends Committee. The residents also received three games and an additional controller. The home is now a hive of activity with residents bowling and playing tennis without leaving the comfort of the home.
Romans needs volunteers
Romans operates a trolley service for its residents selling toiletries and sweets. The trolley operates every month and takes a small amount of time to wheel the trolley around to our residents. Our residents really appreciate this service but if we don’t get any more volunteers to help us we will have to consider stopping this invaluable service. It is also an opportunity for our volunteers to chat with our residents and for our residents to see a new face. If you would like to discuss becoming volunteer for Romans please contact Jacquie Richards who will provide further details. The telephone number is 01273 270100.
Romans Fundraising Committee looking for volunteers
Our fundraising Committee known as “Friends” consists of staff and resident’s friends and family. The Friends recently met and we urgently need a Secretary. This is not an onerous task the Committee meet every six weeks and organise at least two fundraising events throughout the year. We are looking for a volunteer who has an hour to spare to attend the meetings and assist with the events. Without the Friends Committee we are unable to provide those little extras that our residents appreciate. If you would like to join us please contact Jacquie Richards at Romans Care Home 01273 270100 or email Romans through this website. Thank you for your support.
Romans creates a memories book
Julie Sweet is co-ordinating a residents memory book. So often special memories are lost and at Romans we want to share a special memory. Each resident has been asked for a memory that they would like to share and this will be entered into a book to be kept at Romans. The residents have found it therapeutic to share their memories.
This is an ongoing project and has been enlightening.
